Eating and drinking on the go is part of the modern lifestyle. This is also linked to the requirement for flexible packaging solutions. As a result, there is a broad spectrum of bioplastics products available for the food and catering segment. The selection ranges from cups, mugs and trays to plates and cutlery. These products can be found with increasing frequency on the delicatessen or snack bar counter as well as at major events.

At the Catholic World Youth Conference in Cologne/Germany in 2005, 7 million of such units were used. The waste was collected, fermented and composted. They are also successfully used in stadiums. For example, disposable items used at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005 were compostable.

The advantage in this area is obvious. Composting offers a simple and cost-effective solution for the recovery of used products as food scraps pose no problem at all.
