Electrical appliances

A large proportion of electrical applicances is made up of plastics. Casing, circuit boards and data storage these days are made of plastic to ensure the appliances are light and mobile whilst simultaneously being tough and durable.

In technology-obsessed Japan, especially, many companies in the consumer electronics industry  are working on the use of bioplastics. NEC, Tokyo/Japan, has recently announced that it is replacing 10 % of plastics with bioplastics. Computer housings (Sanyo, Osaka/Japan) are the subject of development as are Blue Ray DVDs (Pioneer, Long Beach, CA/U.S.). Mobile phone covers are also being  developed by companies such as Nokia, Helsinki/Sweden, and Motorola, Schaumburg, IL/U.S.
