EUBP Open Letter to Cabinets of EU Commissioners -
Call for Signature

Dear Members,

As you are surely aware of, the upcoming EU policy regulations, including the revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, the Policy framework for bio-based, biodegradable, and compostable plastics, the Sustainable Products Initiative, and the Waste Framework Directive revision, are liable to have a lasting effect on our industry’s potential for future business in Europe.

In an attempt to take our lobbying efforts to a higher level, we drafted an open letter (click here to download) to be sent to the Cabinets of Executive Vice-President of the EU Commission Frans Timmermans, Environment Commissioner Sinkevicius, Internal Market and Industry Commissioner Breton and to Research and Innovation Commissioner Mariya Gabriel.

The purpose of this letter is to raise our concerns regarding the ongoing policy developments and their potential impact on our industry. These refer, among other, to the fact that the direction in which the review of the PPWD is going may not be one in line with the EU Green Deal ambitions, and we have genuine concerns that the Commission does not plan to include bio-based plastics in the inception impact assessment which will serve as basis for the PPWD proposal for a Regulation. Additional concerns we have are linked to the negative list for innovative products/ minimum recycled content/ calculation of GHG emissions as compared to conventional plastics, and the JRC LCA method - to name just a few concerns that make us think that the EU Commission may be biased in its decision making process with regards to bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastics.

As you can see, the enclosed open letter has already been signed by a number of our members. However, in order to maximize its potential impact, we deem it necessary that as many of our members as possible signal their support by co-signing it.

Therefore, in deviation of our original intention to send out the letter on 20 June, we are prolonging the deadline for submitting the commitments to co-sign until Monday, 27 June, COB

In the interest of our industry, we ask you to endorse our venture by confirming your support and sending us your logo and the name and function of the responsible person to be put under the letter. Contact: Maria Negut, Head of EU Affairs: negut@european-bioplastics.org.

We thank you in advance for your collaboration.

Kind regards,
Hasso v. Pogrell
