ZeroW Project Tackles Food Waste with Smart Packaging Innovation
Dear Members,
Have you heard about the ZeroW project?
Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food go to waste—enough to feed 2 billion people. The ZeroW project, co-financed by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Programme, is working to cut food loss and waste (FLW) by half by 2030 and achieve near-zero FLW by 2050. As part of its efforts, ZeroW’s Systemic Innovation Living Lab 2 (SILL 2) has developed an innovative bio-based, compostable smart packaging solution for oily fish to extend the shelf-life of packaged products and facilitate stock management. This smart packaging integrates a freshness label and a mobile app, providing real-time quality data to both retailers and consumers. With 10% of Europe’s food waste linked to date labeling confusion, this breakthrough packaging could play a key role in reducing waste and improving food sustainability. Partners from across the entire packaging value chain are involved in this initiative. Novamont, international player in the bioplastics and biochemicals sector, develops the innovative bio-based and compostable materials. The packaging solution, incorporating barrier coating and a freshness label, is designed by ITENE, a research center specializing in packaging design, safety, and functionality, in collaboration with the packaging producer TermoFormas. EROSKI, a major retail company in Spain, is responsible for validating the packaging solution. ➡️ Find out more about ZeroW project at https://www.zerow-project.eu/ ➡️ Download the factsheet here
