EUBP Webinar on soil-biodegradable mulch films - follow up
Dear Sir or Madam, Thank you for your interest in European Bioplastic’s webinar “How to assess biodegradability of agricultural mulch films”. A special thanks goes to our speakers who gave scientific insights on soil-biodegradability of polymers in theory and practice. You may download the presentations here: - Bruno De Wilde: Biodegradation in soil: Principles – Specifics
- Franceso Degli Innocenti: All biodegradable polymers are polyesters… The enzymes that degrade them (esterases) are ubiquitous
- Michael Sander: Soil-biodegradable mulch films: Fact, not Fiction! …a journey beyond measuring CO2!
European Bioplastics is firmly convinced that certified soil-biodegradable mulch films do belong in the EU Fertilising Product Regulation. You can find a deeper elaboration of our position here: Why certified soil-biodegradable mulch films belong in the EU Fertilising Product Regulation Certified soil-biodegradable mulch films have been applied on agricultural soils for more than 20 years. They have a similar agronomical efficiency compared to conventional, non-biodegradable plastics, specifically in terms of increase of yield and quality of crops, control of weeds and increase of soil temperature and moisture. Certified soil-biodegradable mulch films do not cause loss of agricultural topsoil and help to stop leakage and the accumulation of microplastics in agricultural soils. As such, incorporating this innovative product into the Fertilizing Product Regulation would tackle several environmental and agronomic challenges all at once, including the need to produce more food from less land and farm more sustainably using less resources. We look forward to continuing these discussions with you over the coming months.
