Biodegradability of plastics in the marine environment
In the context of the EU Plastics Strategy and the recently published proposal for a Directive on the reduction of single-use plastic products, biodegradable and compostable plastics are increasingly being discussed with regard to their potential to contribute to tackling marine litter. Constance Ißbrücker, Head of Environmental Affairs at European Bioplastics (EUBP), provides some insights inton the current developments in this field.

Neste and IKEA team up to develop bio-based PP
IKEA has teamed up with Neste, a leader in renewable solutions for polymer production and member of European Bioplastics, to produce bio-based plastics. Both companies aim to produce PP and PE from renewable or recycled waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil, as well as sustainably produced vegetable oils. The pilot at commercial scale will start during fall 2018.

Avantium starts construction of bio-MEG demonstration plant in the Netherlands
Avantium N.V., a leading technology development company and forerunner in renewable chemistry, has started construction of a new demonstration plant that will help advance the production of bio-based monoethylene glycol (MEG) made directly from renewable sugars.

Be quick! Early bird rate ends on 30 June
Register for the 13th European Bioplastics Conference before 30 June 2018 to save up to EUR 300 with the early bird rate! The leading annual bioplastics event in Europe is taking place on 4/5 December 2018 at the Titanic Chaussee Hotel in Berlin, Germany. This year’s event will focus on advanced innovations in bioplastics as well as on environmental aspects and opportunities for growth. Experts are invited to submit proposals for presentations. Submissions for poster presentations are also welcome. The deadline to submit an abstract ends 31 July 2018.
