EP Intergroup discusses the future of plastic materials in the circular economy
On 7 April 2016, the European Parliament Intergroup on ‘Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’ invited a group of policy-makers and experts from regional authorities, NGOs and other stakeholders along the plastics value chain to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the role of plastics in the circular economy at a meeting entitled „The Future of Plastic Materials in the European Circular Economy”, hosted by MEP Miriam Dalli, Chair of the Circular Economy Working Group of the EP Intergroup. European Bioplastics’ Managing Director, Hasso von Pogrell, was also invited to the expert panel to provide insights on the crucial role of bioplastics in the transition towards a European circular economy and on how a supportive legislative framework is needed to foster the full environmental, social, and economic potential of bio-based products in Europe…

Updated JRC report on the environmental sustainability assessment of bioeconomy products and processes
In 2013, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) was entrusted to set up a Bioeconomy Oberservatory with the task to perform a comprehensive environmental sustainability assessment of various bio-based products and their supply chains using a life-cycle perspective. In November 2015, JRC published its report on the ‚Environmental Sustainability Assessment of Bioeconomy Products and Processes‘, which compiles the main results and outputs of this assessment and includes 14 environmental sustainability factsheets on food & feed, industrial bio-based products, and bioenergy. The report has now been updated, in particular the environmental factsheets on 7 of the industrial bioproducts, including PHA, lactic acid, PLA, succinic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and 1,3-propanediol...
