New report calls to suspend the use of “oxo-degradable” plastics
As set out in the amemdment of the EU Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste from 2015, the European Commission was tasked to assess the impacts of so-called “oxo-degradable” plastics on the environment and propose “a set of measures to limit their consumption or to reduce any harmful impacts“. To inform the Commission’s decision making process, a comprehensive impact study has been conducted and the results of report are very clear in concluding that oxo-degradable plastics should not be allowed to be sold in Europe…

EUBP urges European Council to support bio-based packaging
The ongoing revision of the European Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste (94/62/EC) represents a concrete opportunity for the bioeconomy sector in Europe and the transition to a circular economy. Earlier in March this year, the European Parliament voted, for the first time ever, for an amendment of this directive that requires Member States to incentivise and promote the use of bio-based packaging and improve market conditions for such products. It is now on the Representatives of the Members States in the European Council to confirm the EU’s commitment to make Europe’s packaging sector more resource efficient and sustainable...

EUBP seminars: Want to learn more about bioplastics?
During this year's interpack (4-10 May 2017, Duesseldorf, Germany), European Bioplastics offers two on-site seminars to inform about bioplastics: 'An Introduction to Bioplastics’ (4 May, 14:00-17:30) and ‘A Guide to Communication on Bioplastics’ (8 May, 10:30-13:30). The seminars are designed for professionals from the plastics industry and related fields and will provide substantial, in-depth information to equip the participants with the essential theoretical knowledge and practical tools to work with bioplastics.

Bioplastics – Making the Difference! #EUBPconf2017
Registration is now open for the leading bioplastics event in Europe – the 12th European Bioplastics Conference on 29-30 November 2017 in Berlin. The 12th edition of the annual European Bioplastics Conference will showcase how bioplastics are 'Making the Difference' in driving innovations forward for more sustainability, resource efficiency, and functionality. The two-day event will highlight some of the latest and most innovative developments in new bio-based materials, applications, processing and end-of-life options, and will take a closer look at recent amendments in the policy frameworks for the European bioeconomy and circular economy and their implications on the bioplastics industry in Europe. If you would like to contribute to the programme, you can still submit your abstracts.

Upcoming EUBP Members Meeting
The next Members Meeting will take place on 21st June 2017 where we will be electing a new Board, present the Annual Report 2016, and will discuss important issues and projects in 2017. Please save the date. Your attendance in the Members Meeting is important and highly appreciated. The Product Groups (Bio-based and Biodegradables) will meet on 20th June, the day prior to the Members Meeting to make travelling to the meetings more convenient. The WG Communications will meet on 22nd June.

For the second time, our media partner bioplastics MAGAZINE, in cooperation with Green Serendipity, will host the bio!PAC conference on packaging made from bio-based materials. Experts from all areas of bio-based materials, suppliers, and brand owners will present the latest developments in materials and applications. Different disposal options will also be discussed as well as bio-based packaging in the general context of the bioeconomy.
The 3 day-breakfast-conference (8:00 a.m. – 12:30) will be held on the 4th, 5th and 6th of May 2017 in Düsseldorf, Germany (during interpack) and includes free access to interpack 2017 (day-ticket(s)).
