Bioplastics Recycling Cluster
Spanning from September 2025 to March 2026, the Bioplastics Recycling Cluster Talk series focuses on How to set up cost-competitive sorting and recycling schemes for bioplastics? The talks are short, peer-to-peer, scientific talks featuring experts from three research and innovation projects funded by the CBE Joint Undertaking: ReBioCycle, MoeBIOS and PROSPER.
The talks focus on the following topics:
- Collecting and sorting of bioplastics (NIR and AI and Digital tools, models)
- Recycling approaches for bioplastics (e.g., mechanical, chemical, thermochemical, microbial, enzymatic)
- Regulations and norms for the recycling of bioplastics
- Certification and labelling
Who are these talks for?
Fellow researchers, from the public and private sector.
Format:
- Online event.
- Time: Always 12:00-12:45 pm CET.
- Each talk consists of a 30-minutes presentation, followed by a 15-minute Q&A with the participants.
- The talks are moderated by European Bioplastics.
- The talks will be recorded. The Q&As will not be.

9 September 2025 - NIR technologies and digital tools for collecting and sorting bioplastics
In this first talk, we spotlight new technologies and digital tools that are transforming how bioplastics are identified and sorted in waste streams. Insight will be provided by two leading experts from the MoeBIOS project: Carles Musoll (PICVISA) and Gemma Figuerola Miró (LEITAT). Together, they will share innovations in near-infrared (NIR) sorting technologies.

7 October 2025 - Bioplastics sortings and digital tools empowered by AI
In this second talk, we spotlight digital tools empowered for the sorting of bioplastics. You will hear insights from a leading expert in the field, Antoine Bourely (Pellenc ST).

4 November 2025 - Design for Recycling criteria for bioplastics packaging
In this third talk, we highlight the design criteria for recycling bioplastics. The topic is highly relevant in the era of implementing the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. You will hear insights from Lorette Du Preez, Head of Sustainability and Environmental Affairs at European Bioplastics, and Laura Tirkkonen-Rajasoalo, co-founder and Chief Compliance Officer at Sulapac. Both experts are working within the technical committees of the European Standardisation Body CEN on the development of recycling criteria for biodegradable plastics. Both European Bioplastics and Sulapac are partner in the ReBioCycle project.

13 January 2026 - The PROSPER Bioplastics Sorting Model
In this talk, we spotlight the bioplastics sorting model being developed within the PROSPER project. Dr. Wang Li (Ghent University), will provide insights into how the model can provide insights into bioplastic design for sustainable waste management, and offer actionable timepoints for cost-effective investment in PLA sorting infrastructure.
