Algenesis Labs is a materials science and technology company founded in 2016 by three UC San Diego professors: Dr. Stephen Mayfield, Dr. Michael Burkart, and Dr. Robert Pomeroy. The company develops high-performance, bio-based, fully biodegradable polyurethanes using its
patented Soleic® technology.
Soleic® polyurethanes are made from renewable plant-based feedstocks, deliver a 50–65% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to petroleum-based alternatives, and biodegrade in compost, soil, and marine environments without leaving persistent microplastics. Bio-based content ranges from 56–100% depending on product grade, verified per ASTM D6866. The company has published 17 peer-reviewed papers validating the technology.
Soleic® is commercially available in polyol, TPU, and foam formats, with European distribution through Safic-Alcan. Algenesis holds USDA BioPreferred certification, ISO 14001:2015 environmental management certification, and an EcoVadis Gold Medal (top 5% of rated
companies globally).
Recognition includes the 2026 American Chemical Society (ACS) Green Chemistry Challenge Award, the 2025 American Chemistry Council (ACC) CPI Polyurethane Innovation Award, and the 2026 Green Product Award.
