Standards, certifications, and labels
Because bioplastics often look and feel like conventional plastics, standards, certifications and labels are essential to distinguish them. They also give clear, credible definitions and test methods, so that claims about bioplastics can be verified and trusted.
- Standards establish technical definitions, test methods, and criteria.
- Certification is the independent, third-party verification that a product meets a given standard.
- Labels are the visible marks (logos, icons) placed on products, backed by certification, to help users, consumers, and waste management systems identify them.
Together, they build transparency, credibility, and trust in bioplastic claims. European Bioplastics emphasizes that product claims are hard to verify by consumers — certification and labelling helps bridge that gap.
