The innovation is the result of intensive collaboration between Futamura (UK) and Repaq (Germany). The sachet packaging solution is a flexible laminate material that provides excellent protection and preservation by delivering excellent moisture and gas barrier properties for sensitive foods, especially liquids. It is certified compostable and is based on paper, renewable cellulose and a blend of biopolymers. The laminate structure meets all the requirements for portion packaging and can replace materials that are difficult to recycle such as PET/PE or PET/ALU/PE. It is suitable for direct food contact with all foods and can be produced and packaged on conventional machines with the usual speed and reliability. The compostable laminate structure is MAPcompatible, protects the food throughout its shelf life from quality loss and contamination with volatile hydrocarbons (MOSH-MOAH). It also meets the high mechanical requirements of single-use portion packaging. It can be formed into all common formats and can be heat or ultrasonically sealed.

The home and industrially compostable laminate for liquid sachet packaging is an industry first. Resolving the challenge of liquid packaging has often been referred to as the holy grail for compostable packaging. This new structure can deliver sufficient resistance to liquid and semi-liquid sauces to make it viable for condiment manufacturers to replace their food contaminated non-recyclable mixed material laminates. The material is the first functional garden-compostable and industrially compostable packaging solution for condiments on the EU market. It shows that, in future, it will be possible to replace an increasingly wide variety of non recyclable packaging structures with compostable solutions.
